What is this about?
Radici a Rancio is a non-profit social agriculture organization located in Italy. We focus on regenerative organic agriculture techniques to provide the best fruit and veggies to the locals. But we're also a social hub for anything from creative workshops to late summer dinners.
This page is an awareness tool for us to spread the word about how to cultivate the land in a sustainable and conscious manner!
Dive in and find all the interactive tresures on the way!

Rooted in Change
Growing in harmony with nature
At the foot of the Italian Alps, we are learning to speak the language of the land. This is more than a garden; it is a laboratory of life, a social hub, and a return to the rhythm of nature. We're a non-profit on a mission!
Scroll down to walk with us through a year of regenerative growth — starting from the ground up.
The Seasons
Nature doesn't move in a straight line; she moves in a circle. We follow this ancient rhythm — cultivating not just food, but a continuous loop of regeneration.
Fall
The Great Awakening of the Soil
In regenerative agriculture, autumn isn’t the "end," but the vital preparation for rebirth. It’s the season of the Soil.

Fall 01
Nature doesn't like being naked
In Rancio, we follow the forest’s lead. By covering our terrain with autumn leaves or cover-crops, we create a 'mulch' that suppresses weeds, regulates temperature, and keeps the soil moisture locked in. It’s the earth’s winter coat.
Fall is for the decomposers. Below the surface, billions of microorganisms are turning those leaves into 'Black Gold' (humus). We don’t till the land; we let the worms do the heavy lifting.
Fall 02
The Gentle Cut
In agroforestry, pruning is an act of love. By making clean, strategic cuts during the winter dormancy, we direct the tree's energy. We aren't just tidying up; we are opening 'windows' for sunlight to reach the ground-level crops in the summer. A snip today is a harvest tomorrow.
Winter
The Deep Sleep
Silence isn't empty; it's full of answers. In the heart of the Italian winter, Rancio rests. But look closer—beneath the frost and the fallen snow, the real work is just beginning.

Winter 01
The Wood Wide Web
Nature’s original fiber-optic network. While we stay warm by the fire, trillions of fungal threads (Mycelium) are busy connecting our fruit trees to the vegetable beds. They swap nutrients, share information, and prepare the soil’s chemistry for the spring. We don't just grow plants; we grow a network.
Winter 02
The Ultimate Power Nap
We use a technique called Occultation. By covering the soil with a dark, breathable veil, we block the light but keep the heat.
Why the 'blackout'? It tricks the weeds! Without sun, they can't photosynthesize. Instead, they work the soil for us, break down naturally, and turn into a delicious 'green compost' for the veggies we’ll plant in the Spring.
It’s work-smarter-not-harder agriculture.

Spring
The Awakening
The alarm clock of the earth has gone off. In Rancio, Spring isn't just a season; it’s a revelation. As the sun climbs higher over the Resegone, the life we’ve been protecting underground finally breaks the surface.

Spring 01
The Big Unveiling
Time to lift the veil. After months of 'Occultation,' we peel back the covers to find the perfect seedbed. The weeds have composted back into the earth, leaving behind soil that is soft, nutrient-rich, and ready to nourish. No plowing, no digging–just oxygenation and compost.

Spring 02
Cover-crop
Nature hates a void. After we lift the black veil, we don't leave the earth naked. We chop our cover-crops (clover, pees, and oat) which where planted during winter. These plants aren't for us to eat–they are a gift to the soil. They fix nitrogen, prevent the spring rains from washing away nutrients, and keep our underground microbial friends fed and happy.
Spring 03
The Power of "We"
In a regenerative forest garden, nobody grows alone. We plant in 'Guilds'–communities of plants that support each other. Here, legumes mine nitrogen for the soil, fruit trees and paulownia cast a protective shade, herbs swap scents to keep away pests, while potatoes and carrots work the deep earth
It's a silent, green community where every root has a role.
Spring 04
Our Winged Residents
Our most important volunteers have wings. By planting a 'Pollinator Highway' of wildflowers and herbs, we invite bees and butterflies to make Rancio their home. They are the invisible engine of our harvest, ensuring that every blossom has the chance to become a fruit.
Summer
The Abundance
When the sun stands still over the Lake, Rancio becomes a sanctuary. In the peak of the Italian summer, we don't fight the heat—we dance with it. Through clever design and ancient wisdom, our garden stays cool, hydrated, and humming with life.

The Living Umbrella
The Living Umbrella
The Living Umbrella
On the steep slopes of Lecco, the sun can be relentless. Our agroforestry trees act as a "Living Umbrella," dropping the ground temperature by up to 10°C. This canopy doesn't just provide fruit; it creates a cool sanctuary where delicate salads and herbs can thrive even in the peak of August.
Summer 02
The Heat-Busters
While the top canopy shades from above, the "Support Crew" works from below. Deep-rooted trees act as biological pumps, lifting water and nutrients from the mountain's depths to share with their neighbors.
To maintain humidity in this heat, we add biological compost, mulch, and cover-crops.
Summer 03
Catching the Clouds
We treat every drop of Alpine rain like a guest of honor. By catching rainfall in our self-made reservoirs, we only use exactly what the plants need.
Summer 04
Preparation for the Fall
As we reach the end of summer, harvest is at its all-time high. We harvest most of our crops, prep the soil via oxygenation, compost, mulch, and plant the seeds for our fall crops. Cabbage, fennel, broccoli, califlower, and many other fall favorites are plantet.
The Human Harvest
The most important thing we grow at Radici a Rancio isn't a vegetable—it's community. No matter the season, we gather to share meals, host workshops, and rediscover the rhythm of "Slow Living."
We are building a neighborhood that knows how to grow together, one harvest at a time.
…and that's regenerative organic agriculture for you in one looooong scroll!
